HOW TO BE MORE SUCCESSFUL
IF You Want To Know How To Be More Successful, You Firstly Have to Consider If Your Priorities Are Right.
Analogies can provide powerful lessons. It is a fact that whether you like to be organised or spontaneous, there are events in your life that you will spend more time planning and preparing for than others…
Although travel and holidays seem a bit of a distant memory in these pandemic days not many of us will leave for a trip without undertaking a good deal of time planning in advance:
-
- We will possibly research locations, cultures and venues.
-
- We will check and maybe renew insurances and passports
-
- We might talk to friends and family to gain more insight and to get excited.
-
- We may check out the long-range weather forecast.
-
- We will pre book the best travel discounts from door to destination.
-
- We will cancel deliveries and book animal sitters.
-
- We will wash, fold and pack (and maybe repack) a wardrobe to suit our plans.
-
- We will aim to ‘clear our desks’ so we can switch off from work.
-
- We may invest in language learning or splash out on holiday essentials.
-
- We may write and rewrite lists to help us get to the point of departure.
-
- We can at least double this planning if we are responsible for more than just ourselves.
We will prioritise making the most of that long weekend, week, fortnight or longer ramble. Nothing unusual in that you might think. We don’t want anything to be forgotten or to go wrong.
So why is the rest of your life less of a priority than that one trip?
If you want to know how to be more successful you must prioritise so why does planning for the future not inspire most of us to identify a destination and get a plan written down to get there?
Why do most of us not spend time researching possibilities and seek out what lessons others may have to share about their experiences?
Whether it is your personal hopes for your future or a specific career goal, what would it look like if it had a departure date attached, and a series of actions written down on a list to tick off?
What would you need to stop doing and what additional things might you need to find time for to achieve it?
Ask yourself if you applied your ability to prioritise and plan for a trip to your everyday life what life story might you imagine? What new destinations might you reach? What goals might you realise?
Everything is more achievable with a plan even in these most changeable of times. Perhaps now more than ever it is worth investing time in improving your personal effectiveness and identifying a clear personal development plan.
